One day we had a patient come downstairs with her nurses to do speech therapy by hosting her own comedy show. She was barely speaking at a whisper voice level, but the longer she was in the studio and speaking on air, the more her confidence boosted. She opened up to us, laughed, and sang along to Beyoncé, her favorite artist. Moments like these remind us why we do what we do.”

Spencer Buckler
University of South Carolina ‘21

Spencer is a Sophomore at USC studying Broadcast Journalism. He loves the news but also really loves to have fun and be goofy. If his favorite song comes on in public, there’s a 100% chance that he’ll dance or sing along.

It’s hard for me to pick a favorite moment but every Tuesday morning we shared good news happening in our lives and it was a great way to start the day.”

Charlee Rae
Davidson College '21

Charlee Rae is a Sophomore in College majoring in Communication Studies. She has a passion for meeting people and having an opportunity to bring light into other people's lives. She loves production whether radio or television and hopes to pursue a career in entertainment in the coming years. In her free time, she loves spending time with friends, animals and doing lip sync battles.

My favorite memory was when DJ Zion came to the studio and did just dance with the interns. It meant so much to him to be able to play games and dance, but it meant even more to his grandpa who was there with him every day and that’s what really brought the meaning of Seacrest Studios together for me. It’s not just an internship, it’s an opportunity to be there for someone and support someone who you do not know and may never know again.”

Kathleen Cook
UNC Charlotte ‘19

One of the earliest memories Kathleen has is racing down the stairs, grabbing a pop tart out of the microwave, and watching SportsCenter with her dad. Her passion for journalism continued to blossom throughout high school and college through her work with student media and the athletic department. Through multiple internships, especially Seacrest Studios, she was able to develop her skills and secure a job with ESPN on their new channel, the ACC Network.

“My favorite memory at Seacrest world definitely be working with DJ Lion. He was a patient I had that couldn’t leave his room, but he wanted to do a show. I talked with his nurses and with Meredith and we were able to produce not one but two shows for him all from his room. It was neat to see how we can enhance what we already have to make Seacrest Studios more accessible to our patients.

Arlette Hawkins
North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University '19

Arlette Hawkins is a Spring 2019 graduate of North Carolina A&T State University. She studied Journalism & Mass Communications with a concentration in Multimedia and a minor in Spanish. Her interests in the two subjects motivated her to study abroad in the spring of 2018. The following year she joined the Seacrest Studios family to continue to discover more countries through her show “What in the World.” Arlette is motivated by her favorite quote: “If you don’t see it – create it.” She is the recipient of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship and a UNCF Walt Disney Scholar. She will continue her studies at Elon University in pursuit of a Master of Arts in Interactive Media. Arlette aspires to write for television, movies, and documentaries.

“My favorite memory in Seacrest Studios was learning sign language with a patient.”

Holly Van Kuren - “DJ VK”

She plans to pursue a career in sports broadcasting or health communications in the Charlotte area.

My favorite memories include seeing many of our courageous patients discharged! As well as Meredith organizing a surprise visit for my family to come and see the magic we create in the studio!
